The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art is proud to announce the display signs with individual works of art created by SAMA Teaching Artists, Deb Bunnell and Amy Roadman, in honor of local area healthcare workers. These signs will be placed around UPMC Altoona for workers to view as they are going into the hospital.

Arts-In-Education

SAMA’s Arts-in-Education (AIE) program is a series of integrated, interdisciplinary lessons designed for kindergarten through 12th grade students. The presentations rely on direct observation of works of art from the Museum’s education collection, which are brought into the schools as part of the program. The AIE program provides students with age appropriate lessons that emphasize creation, technique, history, criticism, and aesthetics.

Opportunities are provided for students to create and respond to art, learn about the placement of art in culture and history, and make judgments about the quality of art. Lessons may include abstract/non-objective art, animals, book illustration, decorative arts, landscape, Native American arts, photography, portraiture, sculpture, and still life.

Let Us Come to Your School

Arts-in-Education packages are booked by the week and include 20 to 25 art appreciation presentations by a museum educator. Additional sessions are available by the day. Special AIE single-day programs also are available. Participating schools must provide the following: class schedules for the museum educator, single location for presentation, assistance in unloading and loading artwork (custodian or student), safe storage for art and equipment while on property, and acknowledgment of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in all publicity.

All SAMA education packages include an exhibition tour at the Museum of your choosing at no additional charge.

Artist-In-Residence

In partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, SAMA offers an Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program that provides students with an opportunity to interact directly with professional artists in a student/mentor relationship with mutual involvement in the creative process. Presentations for core groups are designed to offer in-depth learning about particular artistic disciplines. Additional presentations are designed for the general student population, teachers, arts groups, and the community at large.

The Artist-in-Residence package includes a minimum 20-day school residency by a professional visual or performing artist, as well as the administration of scheduling, financial management, planning, and evaluation. Participating schools must provide the following:

  • one to three core group(s) of no more than thirty students to work with the resident artist

  • single location for presentation

  • safe storage for art and equipment while on property

  • acknowledgment of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts in all publicity

  • assessment of residency and presentation

Museum/Healthcare Partnership Program

In 2003, SAMA introduced its Museum/Healthcare Partnership Program, an initiative designed to help area residents suffering from mental and physical disabilities. Through the program, SAMA’s trained artists and educators work with health care providers to develop residencies and workshops aimed at providing relief for patients dealing with physical pain and discomfort.

During these residencies, patients have the opportunity to work with professional artists and learn various artistic disciplines including painting, sculpting, puppetry, dance, collage, storytelling, and Native American music and crafts, among others. In recent years, the program has been expanded to include working with disabled veterans, as well as place a greater emphasis on citizens with mental handicaps. Nearly ten years later, the Museum’s program has benefited more than 10,000 individuals throughout central and western Pennsylvania.

Healthcare packages include a minimum 10-day residency by a professional visual or performing artist, as well as the administration of scheduling, financial management, planning, and evaluation. Participating facilities must provide the following: single location for presentation, safe storage for art and equipment while on property, acknowledgment of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in all publicity, and assessment of residency and presentations.
