SAMA-ALTOONA SET FOR ANOTHER BLUE MONDAY
Altoona – The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona
will feature the music of Charles Wolf at its next Blue
Monday program, scheduled for May 12. Blue Monday
is held from 6 to 8 p.m. the second Monday of every month,
April through September. The program begins with a guided
exhibition tour at SAMA-Altoona, and is followed by a light
supper and libations while guests listen to some of the
Altoona region’s finest musical talent. Cost for Blue
Monday is $20 per person. Please call the Museum at
(814) 946-4464 for reservations.
Charles Wolf returns to the
Blue Monday line-up for a second straight season. The
group is comprised of Charlie Leiden on keyboards and Peter
Wolf on guitar. Wolf studied jazz drumming with Ken Dalluge
and Jerry Granelli in Seattle and was a member of Randy
Banks’ Seattle Escola de Samba in the mid ‘80s. He was a
founding member of The Process Riot, an early ‘80s concept
band, and in the ’90s formed Brother Hooch, which enjoyed
success in the Washington state area. In recent years, Wolf
has focused on the guitar and formed the duo Charles Wolf
with his cousin, Charlie Leiden. Leiden is an accomplished
pianist who has played throughout the region, including
several receptions and events at the Southern Alleghenies
Museum of Art.
The evening also will
include a tour of the Museum’s current exhibition, Mary
Sheppard Burton: The Art of Textiles. On view through
May 25, the exhibition features nearly 20 rugs and
wall-hangings by Burton. She is considered one of the
world’s foremost authorities and lecturers on the art of
rug-hooking, and has authored two books used extensively by
home economists as guides when judging county and state fair
rug-hooking competitions. Burton’s intricate use of
patterns, designs and colors have helped her reach the
pinnacle of her medium. Her yarns are all hand-dyed, and she
is renowned for the passion and enthusiasm that emanates
from her art. Visitors will marvel at the sheer size and
elaborate detail of her work.
The Southern Alleghenies
Museum of Art at Altoona is located in the Brett Building at
1210 Eleventh Avenue. The Museum is a handicapped-accessible
facility and is open to the public free of charge. Hours of
operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1
to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Parking is available in the lot at the
rear of the building or in the garage across the street. For
