SAMA-LORETTO TO DISPLAY WORKS FROM PERMANENT COLLECTION
Loretto – The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto
is pleased to announce the opening of its latest exhibition,
From Charles Burchfield to Peter Adams: Watercolors and
Pastels from the Permanent Collection. On view March 21
through September 14, the exhibition features nearly 60
works.
Watercolor is valued for
its transparent, fluid and luminescent properties. It is a
medium that captures a fleeting moment in time because it
demands spontaneity due to its lack of viscosity. Pastel
combines the line of drawing with the color of painting to
produce a vibrancy not readily found in other media.
The exhibition features
works by more than three dozen artists, including master
pastelists and watercolorists such as Peter S. Adams, Thomas
Hart Benton, David Armstrong, Adolf Dehn, Arny Karl,
Theodore Lukits, Gil Dellinger, Albert Handell, Walt Kuhn,
Frederick Alan Counsel, and Charles Burchfield. The
exhibition will encompass movements in art such as Realism,
Contemporary Romanticism, Neo-Expressionism, Abstractionism,
and Surrealism.
When SAMA first opened its
doors in 1976, its permanent collection consisted of 47
paintings, sculptures and drawings and a collection of 20
etchings by John Sloan. Since that time, the collection has
grown to number more than 3,000 works by some of the
nation’s preeminent artists, such as Mary Cassatt, Andy
Warhol, Herman Maril, Grant Wood, and Norman Rockwell.
The Southern Alleghenies
Museum of Art at Loretto is located on the campus of Saint
Francis University. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. weekends. The Museum
is open to the public free of charge. For more information,
