ALTOONA MUSEUM OFFERS
SUMMER CAMP
Altoona—The Southern
Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona will be offering an art
camp this summer for local children. This year’s camp,
Batik Boutique, will give children the unique experience
to create art through the ancient process of Batik: applying
wax to fabric in any design and then dyeing it. This camp is
designed for children 8 through 14 and is taught in small,
informal groups to provide children with exposure to a
museum setting, as well as a chance to work with a variety
of artistic media.
During this two-week
course, which runs on weekdays from July 23 to August 3,
2007, children will begin to understand that the wax
prevents the dye from touching the fabric in specified
areas. After the fabric is dry, the possibilities are
endless. This summer’s camp allows participants to create an
abundance of artwork and take away a tool that they can use
in future creative endeavors. On the final day of camp,
children will have the opportunity to exhibit their
hand-made works in front of family and friends.
The classes run from 1 to
4 pm and are taught by SAMA Education Coordinators. Cost for
the camp is $125 per child, with art materials and snacks
included. Registration requires a $25 non-refundable deposit
per child and must be received no later than Monday, July 9,
2007. Reservations can be made by calling the Museum at
(814) 946-4464.
