SAMA TO EXHIBIT WORKS BY
BLAIR COUNTY SCULPTOR
Altoona – The Southern
Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona is pleased to announce
the opening of its latest exhibition, The Art of Peter
Frantz. Opening May 4 and remaining on view through
August 5, the exhibition features a dozen works by the
acclaimed Blair County sculptor. For the past few years,
Frantz has been working, studying and showing in the
Philadelphia area, while still maintaining a home and studio
in Sinking Valley.
Visitors to the Museum
during Frantz’s exhibition will be greeted by several
towering, abstract sculptures, as well as tabletop
sculptures and 3-D wall pieces. Frantz tends to work in
wood, glass and metal, and has recently begun casting his
works in bronze.
"Peter’s work is known for
being creative and forceful, blending rich technique into
the turbulent spirit of contemporary American art," said
SAMA-Altoona Coordinator, Barbara Hollander. "While he has
been in Philadelphia over the last few years, he has really
defined and refined his artistic vision. Peter has a truly
unique style: eclectic, inspiring and self-assured."
Frantz has a B.A. from
Goddard College in Vermont and will be receiving an M.FA
this spring from the Academy of the Fine Arts in
Philadelphia. He recently was bestowed with the Ellen Lee
Walker Amelia Award for Sculpture at the 67th
Annual Exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut
Hill. His work has been exhibited throughout the eastern
United States, and was recently featured in SAMA-Loretto’s
Biennial 2006.
The Museum will be holding
a reception to celebrate the exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Friday, June 1. The artist will be on hand to answer
questions about his work, and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres
will be served. Cost is $12 or $10 for SAMA members.
Reservations are required by May 29 and can be made by
calling the Museum at (814) 946-4464. Frantz also will be
speaking at the Museum at a Lunch a l’Art program on July
26. Cost is $12 and $10 for members. Please call the Museum
for more information.
