Stuart Netsky

(American, b. 1955)

Greek Urn, 1993

Cast Resin, 12 3/4" x 7" x 7"

Gift of the artist and Larry Becker Contemporary Art, Philadelphia

(95.136)

Stuart Netsky finds his inspiration in popular culture and domestic life.  While his work reflects classical traditions of Western art, he uses different styles and modern materials for each new body of work.  Cast in resin, Netsky's Greek Urn is removed from an Old Masters museum context to reveal the artist's concern with vanity, beauty, narcissism, and domesticity and his interest in deceptive appearances.

Born in Philadelphia, Netsky received a B.S. in design from Drexel University, an M.A. in sculpture and art education from the Philadelphia College of Art, and an M.F.A. in sculpture from Temple University's Tyler School of Art.  Netsky teaches at Drexel University and has exhibited widely in the Philadelphia region.
