Walter T. Mania, born in 1953 in Cleveland, began his first art classes at the age of ten.  He studied animal drawing under former museum director William Scheele.  Matia creates naturalistic sculptures of North American fowl.  Influenced by French animal portraiture and especially by the art of painter and sculptor Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926), Matia is particularly fascinated by birds at rest.  Works like Black Necked Stilt (1984) display beauty, harmony and balance, resulting from Matia's meticulous craftsmanship and keen observation.
