Katja Oxman

(American, b. Germany, 1942)

A House Within, 1988

Etching, 36" x 22"

1989 Collectors Club Purchase

(89.022)

Katja Oxman excels in the art of aquatint etching.  Painted in the tradition of Northern European Renaissance masters, A House Within (1988) offers a profusion of patterns and textures with meticulously defined objects.  Oxman's variety of perspectives gives her work a flat, abstract appearance, despite the intricacy of the design and the lavish colors.

Oxman studied at London's Royal College of Art, the Academy of Munich, Germany, and the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, where she held a full scholarship from 1963 to 1965.  She has been an artist-in-residence at Bryn Mawr College and taught art at the American University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Massachusetts.  Oxman's work has been exhibited in both one person and group shows throughout the United States, and is found in the collections of museums and corporations throughout the world.
