A retrospective of
Barnet's oeuvre, this collection of 12 works contains examples of
both his abstract and figurative pieces. The artist's figurative
studies are enhanced by abstract arrangements of color and form,
and his abstract pieces are appealing because of their connection
to the human form. Atalanta (1975) exemplifies Barnet's
representations of women as objects, rather than subjects, posed
in disquieting solitude.
Barnet studied at the
School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and at the Art Students
League in New York City, where he is a life member. He has
received many awards and four museum retrospectives. His work is
well represented in museum collections, including the Museum of
Modern Art and the Guggenheim.
