The underlying poetry of the scene and the beauty of humanity and nature, often in unguarded moments, are captured in the photographs of André Kertész.  Wandering Violinist, Abony, July 10, 1984, from his Hungarian Memories Series is a sensitive depiction of a wandering violinist and an example of capturing "the secondary episodes which are often far more eloquent than the event itself."  This image also conveys the tragedy of poverty.

Inspired at an early age to become a photographer, Kertész used his first savings to buy an Ica camera and to begin photographing life in Budapest and the surrounding countryside.  His first photos were published in 1917.  In 1925 he emigrated to Paris, where he was part of the avant-garde artistic community and worked as a freelance photojournalist.
