A collection of
watercolors by this native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, portray
life in a steel town from 1943 to 1980. At a time when painting
was not accepted as a career for women, Barbara Zivkovich depicted
the power of the steel mills and the families and neighborhoods of
her home town in the style of American Scene Paintings and Social
Realism. Rosedale Coke Plant, Ebensburg Road is indicative
of her industrial landscapes.
Zivkovich's early training included study at Hofstra College and
the Art Students League in New York City. Her return to Johnstown
marked the development of a personal style, which she described as
"influenced by the work of Charles Burchfield and Edward Hopper."
Her paintings have been shown at the National Academy of Design,
New York; the Metropolitan Gallery, Harrisburg; and the
Westmoreland Museum of Art, Greensburg; as well as at other
museums and galleries throughout Pennsylvania.
