A collection of 17
paintings by Gordon Russell was donated to the Museum in 1992 by
Mr. and Mrs. James Caminiti. Russell's subjects include
landscape, portraiture, and allegory in styles ranging from
figuration to pure abstraction. Poison Plant exemplifies
his effective use of stylistic abstraction through recognizable
imagery.
A native of Altoona,
Pennsylvania, Russell received a full scholarship to study at the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He also studied at the
Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. His numerous awards
include a 1968 prestigious Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation
Grant. At the age of 25, Russell was the youngest artist ever
represented with a major exhibition in New York City at Durlacher
Brothers.
