Mary Jane Peale
specialized in portraiture and still life and was one of the last
of the Peale family to do so professionally. She painted
companion portraits of her parents in 1860. Her father, Rubens
Peale, died five years after his picture was painted.
The only daughter among seven children of Rubens and Eliza Burd
Patterson Peale, Mary Jane was born February 16, 1827, in New York
City. Her grandfather, the famous painter Charles Willson Peale,
taught all of his eleven surviving children to paint and created
an artistic dynasty unparalleled in American art.
