Wire Drawing

Grade Level:  9-12

Materials Needed:
16g, 18g, 20g copper wire
1/4" brass rod
Bernz-a-matic torch
60/40 solder
Soldering iron
Flux
Jewelry and ring mandrels
Rawhide mallet
Pliers
Hacksaw
Spray paint
Safety glasses

Procedure:

I teach continuous line contour line drawing at the beginning of the year as a craft design possibility. However, they can use any design or drawing that has a lot of interesting line work and detail.

  • The brass rod is annealed with the torch to make it soft and malleable.
  • Begin shaping the brass rod to fit the outline of the drawing. The mandrels are used with the rawhide mallet for large areas while pliers are used to form the small areas. Use the hacksaw to cut the brass rod.
  • Sections of brass rod can be soldered together to form the outline.
  • The copper wires are formed with jewelry pliers to make the details which are soldered together in units if necessary.
  • The copper pieces are then soldered onto the brass outline.
  • We use progressively smaller gauges of wire for smaller details.
  • The finished piece is scrubbed with paint thinner and then soap and water to remove all residue before spray painting
