Grade Level: 9

 

Materials Needed:
Utrecht Bristol Board
Ebony Pencil
 

Objectives:

  • To have students realize an alternate visual identity to an existing image.
  • To enable students in future projects to project possibilities of interpretation that vary from strict visual reference.
  • To develop sensitivity to value and texture on a large scale.


Procedure:

  • Discuss choice of portrait in terms of interest, framing, texture, and dramatic lighting.
  • Explain freeform grid system for larger paper using the same number of lines but with gentle sweeping curvature.
  • Discuss analyzing what happens with the line of chosen portrait as to where it enters a block, where it exits, and what it does between
  • Transference of line analysis to larger flowing block.
  • Shading and texturing procedures and techniques demonstrated.
  • Individualization
