Publicize the "Student Show" with a poster

Establish starting point: Discuss with students what they think posters are used for and why we have them. Explain that posters are used to give information to individuals. Describe how the information included on posters is usually vital information presented in an eye-catching design meant to make an onlooker take a closer look.

Convey to the students where they might see posters, and the different types of posters that they see. Does the poster advertise, alert, or commemorate someone or something.

Directions: This lesson will be to create an advertisement for the “Artists of the 21st Century- Student Art Exhibition.”

Step 1. Have students draw several small sketches. Each sketch should take only a minute or two. Hints:

● Have one oversized image

symmetrical or asymmetrical

● most posters are vertical or horizontal

● draw letters in pencil first

● do lettering on a computer, if accessible

● leave margins around the outside

● some empty space is important

● make a border if there is too much empty space

● simple message that can be read in seconds

● letters should be in a straight line

● light colors cannot be seen from a distance

● letters should be all the same color

Step 2. Have students decide how they will arrange the different components in their poster. (Draw all the letters lightly with pencil first)

Step 3.  Have students concentrate on the “main image.” (Make it large and colorful enough to be attention-grabbing)

Step 4. Have students prop his/her poster up and look at it from a distance. Then have student notice if any modifications could be made. (Outlining letters or images with a dark marker)
