Gary Bukovnik
(American, b. 1947)
Harmony in Blue and Green, 1985
Watercolor on paper, 59 1/2” x 30 1/4”
Gift of Judith Finkelstein (2008.079)

Harmony in Blue and Green is a fine example of Gary Bukovnik’s technical mastery of the watercolor medium.  Known for his floral studies, Bukovnik brings together rich color and a sense of drama that lend his subjects an imposing sense of presence.  In Harmony in Blue and Green, the strong vertical emphasis and the expanse of white paper surrounding the vase enhance the monumental quality of the subject, conferring on it a power not ordinarily seen in floral still-life paintings.

Bukovnik was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1947.  He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and since 1974 he has lived in San Francisco.  His work may be found in a number of museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
